A2 Milk

A1 vs. A2 protein: what’s the difference?

The main difference between ordinary and A2 Milk lies within the milk’s protein. To better understand the protein, it’s helpful to first review the milk’s content.

All milk is made up of water and solids. The solid components within milk are:

  • Lactose (milk sugar)
  • Fat
  • Minerals
  • Protein

Casein is the main protein found in milk, and the type of casein present is what sets A2 Milk apart from ordinary cow’s milk.

There are two types of Beta-casein: A1 and A2. Most cows’ milk available on grocery store shelves contains a combination of these A1 and A2 Beta-casein proteins. A2 Milk comes from cows that only produce the A2 protein and no A1.

The case for A2 Milk

The difference between A1 protein and A2 protein is very small, but the tiny variance may make a big difference in the way the protein is digested. Published research suggests that some people may avoid stomach discomfort when they drink milk with only the A2 protein.
